What To Watch For When Moving Long Distance

What To Watch For When Moving Long Distance

In April 22, 2016

Moving away from the place you call home can be stressful. Whether you are moving twenty miles away or moving two-thousand miles away, there will be a lot of hard work and at least a little bit of stress. Making sure that you take the time to pre-plan and re-plan can save you a lot of excess stress that you don’t need on top of everything else. By knowing the top 5 most common mistakes that people make when moving long distance, you can avoid some of the pitfalls that other have fallen into.

5) Letting others disassemble the furniture. This is one of the most common mistakes that people make when moving. First of all, that huge dining room table will take up much less space in the moving truck when the top is separated from the bottom. Plus, if you disassemble it yourself, you can save the hardware in a separate, marked baggie so that reassembly is possible and easy.

4) Taking too much. Now is the time to purge your closets, basement, storage areas, and kitchen cupboards. There is no time like the present to start fresh and new. If there are items that you have not used in years, clothes you have not worn in seasons, and utensils that you don’t even know what to do with, it’s time to call the Goodwill. Taking too much is costly and you’ll just have to unpack it again and restore it.

3) Not leaving at the right time. Believe it or not, the timing of your move is important. Don’t have the movers arrive at a time when they’ll be pulling out in rush hour. Plus, when moving long distance, you’ll want to plan ahead so that you get there before the movers do, but not so many days sooner that you’re sitting around in the same clothes and eating take-out for days.

2) Not packing properly. Make sure that you pack your things properly so they stay organized and safe. Fragile boxes must be labeled as such and packed well to ensure that items stay intact. And though some people use clothing as packing material to save on space and cost, it’s not always a good idea. Clothing can get easily stained and damaged if something leaks or breaks.

1) Not hiring a reliable moving company. Number one on just about any list you find is the mistake of not hiring a reputable moving company. There are stories of movers cancelling at the last minute and basic estimates begin changed on site. If you are moving long distance, you’ll want to meet with the company and plan every aspect to ensure a smooth and reliable move.

Don’t let your fresh new beginning start out on an old stinky foot. With some good planning and a great moving company to help you, your move will be just the beginning of a new adventure.
