New House? Moving And Storage Tips

In May 6, 2016

You finally found the house of your dreams and it’s time to move! But you don’t even know where to begin. Maybe you moved right into your apartment from your parent’s home, or maybe you didn’t have anything but your clothes and computer after living in the dorm for 4 years. But now, you suddenly find yourself with a lot of stuff and no clue how to pack it and move it all.

Since you aren’t exactly an expert in the field when it comes to moving and storage, you can be thankful that we are a company that’s been around the block, across town, and across the country a few times.

Safe and Strong

When it comes to packing materials, be sure to use strong corrugated cartons with covers. If you get boxes from stores, be sure that bottoms are strong and reinforced. Plastic bags, Styrofoam peanuts, tissue and craft paper, and even newspaper are good bets to keep items safe. Be sure to mark boxes as fragile so everyone knows to take extra care with the contents.

Packing It Up

Pack one room at a time so that you can keep everything in order. Pack at least a few boxes each day to avoid craziness at moving time. Mark your boxes so you know what room the boxes will go in once they all arrive at the new destination. Keep boxes at a weight of 50-pounds or less to make moving easier.

The Flammables

You cannot pack flammable liquids and aerosol cans as these can break or even explode under pressure and temperature changes. Cars and motorcycles must be drained of fuel before moving. Propane tanks need to be purged and tagged by a licensed vendor. Any flammable liquid is discouraged when it comes to moving and storage.

The Little Things

Arrange for the little things you might forget, such as having your mail forwarded, your utilities shut off, and your bank accounts transferred. Be sure to have your personal documentation in one place, such as passports, driver’s licenses, and marriage and birth certificates. Arrange for temporary storage if your new home will not quite be ready on time.

Relax. It’s only a matter of time and the move will be over. Take the time to breathe, say goodbye to your old place, and say hello to the new memories you’ll make.
