How To Help Your Pet With The Move

In June 24, 2016

When packing up and moving to a new location, you pet should also be considered in your plans. You can’t really sit your animal down and explain to them what is happening, so it is extra stressful for them because they don’t understand. There are a few things you can do to help ease the stress of moving, and help your pet with the move by getting them acclimated to the new setting.

A couple of weeks before the move, you are going to want to start taking your dog for trips in the car. Getting your dog used to the car will make the day of the big move much easier. If you wait until the big day to put them in the car for a long car ride, they may freak out and have a very bad reaction. On the day of the move, plan to have your dog isolated somewhere. It can be a fenced in backyard, one room of the house that you’ve already emptied, or a dog crate. There will be a lot of people going in and out of the house, so you won’t want them to be under foot or running out the door when it opens.

Cats should be confined to a pet carrier during a move. Most cats do not do well with a lot of change all at once, so moving is especially stressful on them. An enclosed space will actually give them a sense of security and help them feel more confident. Try to keep them in a quiet area during the bulk of the moving to keep them calm. Be sure to provide fresh water regularly during long car trips, and clean out the carrier if it gets messy.

Pack A Pet Bag

Be sure to pack a bag with your pet’s supplies. Don’t bury them somewhere in the moving truck. You’ll want to have easy access to food and water, plus dishes and any pet medications. You’ll also want to have a leash on hand for dogs. Keep a copy of your pet’s latest health certificates with you in case anyone needs to see them, and also be sure your pet has ID tags on them with your cell phone number just in case they get loose somewhere along the way.
